Hair loss medication options
Hair loss can be stopped and to some extent turned back by using medication. These substances work by blocking the effect of DHT, the hormone that causes hair loss. You can read more about this on the causes for hair loss page.
The effective medicines which are available to prevent hair loss are Recrea, Rogaine and Propecia.
Recrea and Rogaine contain the same active ingredient, Minoxidil. Both preparations can be used by both men and women and purchased at pharmacies. The preparations come as a liniment to be rubbed onto the scalp.
The preparation Propecia is given in tablet form and needs to be prescribed by a doctor. The active element is finasterid which inhibits the creation of DHT in the scalp so it does not affect the hair follicles function.
Eight out of ten people see effects to their hair loss
For eight out of ten people who use one of the above medications, future hair loss is hindered and approximately half regain some of their previously lost hair. The effect is however limited to the front part of the hair line. For those who have so far gone hair loss that they have become bald the medications above will have no effect.
If the medication treatment is stopped the hair loss will resume within a few months (sometimes sooner) and will continue at the same pace as before the treatment was begun.
