All about teeth straightening with dental braces

Tooth straightening involves using visible or invisible dental braces to correct the position of one or more teeth. Teeth straightening (orthodontics) is used for both functional and aesthetical reasons. One therefore separates between aesthetical teeth straightening and functional teeth straightening.

Today teeth straightening is a relatively simple treatment performed on both children and grownups with very good results. The traditional brace is now competing against more modern techniques with focus on an increasingly aesthetical and easier treatment.

This page is about aesthetical teeth straightening, i.e. the type of treatment that primarily aims to provide the patients with a more beautiful smile. The information on this page is factually reviewed by Dentist Marlene Regnander Östergren.

Who is suitable for teeth straightening using dental braces?

Teeth straightening only used to be performed on children up to their teens. Today patients of all ages are treated and there is no age limit.

Our perspective regarding teeth has changed. From just being there to help us chew our food they are now also part of our idea of a presentable and acceptable appearance.

So, teeth straightening is for those that either need to correct their bite to make it work better or for those that need to straighten crooked, rotated and twisted teeth or wish to minimise gaps in order to achieve a more attractive smile.

Many patients have previously chosen not to undergo teeth straightening because of one’s appearance during the procedure. However, with today’s techniques and materials it is no longer a problem.

Who cannot undergo teeth straightening?

Some conditions such as inflamed gums, loosening of teeth, caries (holes), too many crowns, teeth that lack enamel, jaw or face pain or generally neglected teeth are not suitable for teeth straightening. The problem will need to be examined and corrected first.
