The dental/tooth veneers procedure

To have dental/tooth veneers inserted can be seen as a 3-step procedure which you can read about below:

Step 1 – Consultation

The first step for those interested in having porcelain veneers is to contact a clinic that performs and has good experience with the treatment. You will find these in our clinic directory for aesthetical dentistry. Your first visit at the clinic is for a consultation and examination.

The aim of the visit is for you as the patient to receive all the information necessary in order to decide if tooth veneers are right for you. The information regards the procedure, cost and the results that can be expected, both immediately and over time.

During your visit the dentist will examine your teeth and assess whether dental veneers are the correct treatment method and if so which results he/she thinks can be achieved.

Step 2 – The preparatory treatment

Once you have decided you will return to the clinic for a preparatory treatment.

The first step is to rub down the teeth that are to be fit with dental veneers to the same thickness as the porcelain veneers (0,3-1mm). Thereafter an impression is taken of the teeth so that the tooth veneers can be ordered from the manufacturer which takes about 1-3 weeks.

In some cases the dentist will apply temporary porcelain veneers on the teeth that have been prepared in order to protect them while waiting for the proper tooth veneers.

Step 3 – The final treatment

During your final visit you will have your dental veneers attached. First the dentist will try the veneers against your teeth. When necessary they will be rubbed down in order to achieve a perfect fit.

The next step involves cleaning your teeth thoroughly and the teeth are prepared with a special acidic gel in order to provide the best hold for the tooth veneers.

Finally the porcelain veneers are glued into place with special dental cement that is activated by shining a lamp on the teeth. The cement is very strong but in some cases the tooth veneers do fall off. If that occurs the veneer should be saved in order to have it re-glued back into place.

Once the tooth veneers are in place any excess cement is polished away and you are then ready to enjoy your new smile.

It is normal to recommend taking a photo before and after your aesthetical treatment in order to guarantee the result.

If you attend an aesthetically educated dentist then a so called mock-up will probably be provided, i.e. a suggestion of what your new set of teeth will look like. The advantage of this is that you are able to try these in your mouth and can voice your opinion about your teeth before drilling and rubbing down your actual teeth.
